| Key risks | Tirzepatide's most common side effects are gastrointestinal: nausea, diarrhea, vomiting and constipation, heaviest while the dose is being raised and usually settling as the body adjusts. Less common but serious are acute pancreatitis, gallbladder disease, dehydration that can injure the kidneys, and low blood sugar when it is paired with insulin or a sulfonylurea. It carries a boxed warning for thyroid C-cell tumors seen in rats (human relevance unknown) and must not be used by anyone with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or MEN 2.
