Can men take collagen peptides? Yes—collagen peptides are food-derived protein fragments, not female hormones, and men were included in controlled human joint trials. The catch is outcome-specific: evidence in men is credible for exercise-related joints and some training studies, while wrinkle trials have enrolled mostly or only women. Marketing made collagen feminine; biology did not.
Is collagen just for women?
Collagen is not just for women. Collagen powder became closely tied to beauty marketing, pink tubs, hair claims, and wrinkle promises, but that is a marketing history—not a sex-specific biological rule. Men and women both make collagen in skin, tendons, cartilage, bone, and muscle. No trial reviewed here establishes that ordinary collagen peptides work through a female-only pathway.

What do joint studies show about collagen for men?
Collagen for men has direct joint evidence, although the trials tested specific products and mostly measured reported pain—not rebuilt cartilage. In Clark’s 2008 randomized trial, 147 college athletes with activity-related joint pain were assigned collagen hydrolysate or placebo; 72 were men and 75 were women. Only 97 participants supplied evaluable data, including 45 men, which is an important attrition limit.
After 24 weeks, several pain ratings favored collagen hydrolysate. The Clark trial therefore shows that men were not an afterthought in this joint evidence. It does not prove that every collagen powder repairs male knees, nor did the paper report a clean male-only treatment effect.
A 2017 randomized trial studied 139 young athletic adults with functional knee pain using 5 grams of specific collagen peptides or placebo for 12 weeks. Both male and female participants were included, and activity-related pain improved modestly more with collagen; resting pain did not differ significantly. The honest summary is strong on representation and more cautious on certainty: men have been studied for joint symptoms, but product-specific trials are not a universal guarantee.
Does collagen work for men who want more muscle?
Collagen peptides have produced some positive training results in men, but collagen should not be confused with a complete muscle-building protein. A randomized trial in 53 older men with sarcopenia paired 15 grams of collagen peptides or placebo with the same 12-week resistance program. Fat-free mass and quadriceps strength increased more in the collagen group.
The older-men trial answers “does collagen work for men?” only within that setting: older men, resistance training, one branded peptide preparation, and silica placebo. A 2025 corrigendum added previously missing funding and conflict disclosures, including partial costs paid by Gelita and a co-inventor relationship to a patent application. The numerical results were not the correction, but the disclosure matters when grading confidence.
Collagen is rich in glycine, proline, and hydroxyproline but is an incomplete protein. That makes it an interesting connective-tissue supplement, not an automatic replacement for a complete dietary protein. The clearest collagen-peptide benefit story for men is narrower than “more protein equals more muscle.” Training did most of the obvious work; collagen was the tested add-on.
Does collagen work for men’s skin and wrinkles?
Male wrinkle evidence is thin because many prominent skin trials did not enroll men. One randomized trial tested 1 gram daily for 12 weeks in 64 women aged 40 to 60 and reported improvements in hydration and several wrinkle measures. The authors explicitly acknowledged that the study included only women and said extension to men remained an assumption.
That pattern repeats. A 2014 trial enrolled 69 women aged 35 to 55, a 2023 trial enrolled 100 women aged 30 to 60, and a 2024 trial enrolled 85 women aged 43 to 65. Those studies can support a general skin signal, but they cannot tell us with much confidence how large the effect is in men.

What happens after a man swallows collagen peptides?
Collagen peptides are digested into amino acids and smaller peptide fragments; the body does not ship a scoop intact to a sore knee or crow’s-feet. Human absorption work has found rises in collagen-rich amino acids after ingestion, including hydroxyproline. That amino acid is unusually abundant in collagen and helps explain why researchers track it in blood after a dose.
Absorption is not the same as a clinical benefit. Finding hydroxyproline in plasma answers “did components get in?” A pain score, wrinkle measurement, or strength test answers “did something useful happen?” Keeping those endpoints separate prevents a plausible mechanism from being promoted into a result the trial never measured. Are collagen peptides safe, FDA-approved, or banned in sport?
Collagen peptides are sold as foods or dietary supplements in the United States, not as FDA-approved treatments for wrinkles, joint pain, or muscle gain. The FDA states that it does not approve dietary supplements for safety and effectiveness before sale. Short human trials generally report good tolerability, but they cannot establish rare harms or long-term safety, and the source animal matters for allergies and dietary restrictions.

Collagen peptides are not the “peptide hormones” named on the World Anti-Doping Agency list.
