Definition
Potency is how much dose a compound needs to produce its effect — a potent drug works at a small dose, which is not the same as working better.
The peptide potency meaning is how much dose a compound needs to produce a stated effect: a more potent compound needs less, which does not mean it works better. Potency compares dose; efficacy compares the size of the result. Marketing blurs them.
What does potent mean for a peptide?
Potent means dose-efficient, not superior. Pharmacologists pick a defined response and ask how much drug or what concentration produces it. An expert consensus defines drug potency as the dose or concentration required for a given effect; researchers often use EC50, the concentration producing half the maximum response.
The potency meaning in drug research therefore needs an endpoint attached. A peptide might be potent at activating one receptor in cells yet have no human trial showing a useful clinical result. “Potent” without potent at what? is half a sentence wearing a lab coat.
How does potency vs efficacy change what “stronger” means?
Potency vs efficacy separates the dose needed from the largest effect achievable. Two compounds can reach the same result at different doses, or the less potent compound can ultimately produce the larger result. Milligrams alone can also mislead. Route, formulation, absorption, target, and test system affect how much compound reaches the relevant tissue. A lower labeled dose is not a clean comparison unless the conditions and outcome match.

A more potent peptide claim needs a dose-response comparison measuring the same outcome under comparable conditions. Sequence length, receptor binding, an animal result, and a visible effect are different evidence.
