Definition

An amino acid side chain, or R group, is the variable chemical branch that gives each amino acid its identity and behavior.

The answer to what is an amino acid side chain is the variable chemical branch—also called the R group—attached to an amino acid’s central carbon. That branch determines the amino acid’s size, charge, water-friendliness, and reactivity. In engineered peptides, chemists can also modify a side chain to change how long a drug lasts.

Is a fatty-acid tail a normal amino acid side chain?
