Systematic review

Definition

A systematic review gathers every study on a question by a set method; a meta-analysis pools their numbers into one estimate.

The systematic review meaning is a planned search for every study that answers one focused question, followed by a structured check of what those studies found and how trustworthy they are. A meta-analysis is the optional number-pooling step. Neither method can turn weak or animal-only research into strong human evidence.

What does a systematic review actually do?

A systematic review sets the question and eligibility rules first, searches multiple sources, screens the results, checks each included study for bias, and then summarizes the whole body of evidence. The published method lets another team see what was excluded and repeat the search instead of trusting an author’s favorite papers.

Cochrane’s explanation describes the same standardized workflow. The Cochrane review meaning is simply a systematic review produced by Cochrane under its methods, not a separate kind of experiment.

What is a meta-analysis, and how is it different?

A meta-analysis combines compatible numerical results into one weighted estimate; the systematic review finds, selects, and judges the studies that may feed that calculation. That is the practical systematic review vs meta-analysis distinction. A review can stop with a written synthesis when studies measure different outcomes or are too sparse to pool honestly.

The statistical average can look precise without being dependable. A meta-analysis methodology review notes that the pooled result inherits the validity of its included studies. Pooling ten biased or tiny trials produces a tidier number, not better raw evidence. The practical systematic review meaning is a method label, not a quality guarantee.

Is a systematic review the highest level of evidence?

A well-run review of strong human randomized controlled trials can sit near the highest level of evidence, but the label alone earns no automatic promotion. Review quality, publication bias, study design, sample size, and whether the research was done in humans still determine how much confidence the answer deserves.
