Collagen peptides side effects were minimal in randomized trials: occasional mild digestive complaints appeared, but severe effects were not documented. That does not make every powder risk-free. The useful split is between events researchers actually logged, symptoms users report online, and product-level risks such as allergens, extra ingredients, and weak premarket oversight.

That review mainly covered skin-aging trials lasting roughly 4 to 24 weeks. It also pooled different peptide types, doses, and formulations; some products contained vitamins, minerals, or other active ingredients. The result is reassuring for short-term use, but it cannot prove that every collagen powder is harmless for every person or settle years-long safety.
Clark’s 2008 randomized trial gives a cleaner example. Athletes received 10 grams of collagen hydrolysate or placebo daily for 24 weeks. Researchers recorded four adverse events: two new joint injuries, one surgery, and one car accident. One injury and the accident occurred in the collagen group; investigators judged none of the four treatment-related. The trial did not log a digestive side-effect signal.
Can collagen peptides cause constipation?
Controlled evidence does not establish collagen peptides as a cause of constipation. The claim mostly comes from individual user reports, which can identify a possible problem but cannot separate the powder from diet changes, hydration, sweeteners, flavorings, or coincidence. Clark 2008 found no treatment-related adverse events, while the 2026 review described only isolated mild gastrointestinal discomfort.
One newer skin trial complicates any claim that constipation has never appeared in research. Its adverse-event table listed four constipation events among 43 total events, plus nausea, bloating, vomiting, and other complaints. Most were considered only “possibly” related, none were severe, and the paper did not demonstrate that constipation occurred more often because of collagen. “Logged during a trial” and “caused by the supplement” are different findings.
Collagen contains protein but no fiber. If a scoop replaces a fiber-containing breakfast rather than simply being added to it, bowel habits can change for a very ordinary reason. That is a plausible explanation, not proof of a collagen-specific effect.
Does collagen cause bloating?
Collagen has not shown a consistent bloating signal against placebo, although mild digestive discomfort has appeared in trial reports and bloating is commonly reported by users. The 2026 meta-analysis did not identify severe gastrointestinal harm. The newer skin trial logged two bloating events, but again did not establish collagen as the cause.
The product matters as much as the headline ingredient. Plain collagen peptides and collagen hydrolysate are essentially naming variants, but flavored powders may add sugar alcohols, fibers, gums, dairy ingredients, caffeine, or botanicals. If symptoms start with a blend, the ingredient list is more informative than blaming the word “collagen” on the front.
Does collagen peptides cause weight gain?

Collagen is also an unusual protein, rich in glycine and proline but not a complete substitute for varied dietary protein. That is a nutrition limitation, not a side effect.
