HMG peptide: what it is and why PCT users use it
hmg peptide is a shop label for human menopausal gonadotropin, or menotropins: injectable glycoprotein hormones with both follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) activity. PCT users seek HMG for the FSH component, but male post-cycle use is off-label and backed by far less evidence than fertility treatment in women.
Is HMG a peptide or a hormone?
HMG is best described as a urine-derived gonadotropin preparation, not a typical small peptide. Human menopausal gonadotropin contains the glycoprotein hormones FSH and LH, meaning amino-acid chains with sugars attached. Peptide shops use a broad shelf label; the peptide-versus-protein distinction gives the more useful classification.
The current MENOPUR label says menotropins are extracted from the urine of postmenopausal women and further purified. Each labeled vial carries 75 international units of FSH activity and 75 international units of LH activity. HMG is therefore a biologic mixture measured by hormone activity, not one neat peptide sequence.
So, is hmg a peptide? Only in the loose sense that its hormone components are made from amino acids. “Glycoprotein gonadotropin preparation” is the accurate answer. That is also why HMG belongs beside the other non-peptides sold as peptides, not as an evidence-graded compound node.
What does human menopausal gonadotropin do?
Human menopausal gonadotropin supplies two reproductive signals at once. LH activity supports sex-steroid production; FSH acts on ovarian follicles in women and Sertoli cells in the testes, where it supports the machinery needed to make sperm. Think of LH as getting the testicular testosterone factory running and FSH as staffing the sperm-production line.
HMG does not “restart the brain.” Injected gonadotropins act downstream of the hypothalamus and pituitary. Gonadorelin, by contrast, is a gonadotropin-releasing hormone that signals the pituitary to release the body’s own LH and FSH when the relevant system can respond. Similar destination, different switchboard.
Why do PCT users reach for HMG?
PCT users reach for HMG when restoring sperm production matters, because HMG adds FSH activity that hCG does not directly provide. Anabolic-androgenic steroids can suppress the body’s LH and FSH. hCG can replace an LH-like signal and raise testicular testosterone; HMG is added to supply the missing FSH-side signal.
That distinction needs one correction to the usual sales pitch. hCG does not simply “restore testosterone but never sperm.” Intratesticular testosterone is required for spermatogenesis, so hCG alone can produce sperm in some men. The point is narrower: hCG does not replace FSH, and some men need added FSH activity.
In a 1985 study of 21 men with hypogonadotropic hypogonadism, hCG alone normalized sperm counts in all six whose condition began after puberty but only one of 15 whose condition began before puberty. Adding HMG helped some remaining men. That is real male fertility evidence, not a trial of recreational steroid users following a cycle.
How strong is the evidence for HMG in PCT?
The evidence for HMG as post-cycle therapy is thin. Human studies of menotropins in males mostly involve diagnosed hypogonadotropic hypogonadism, a medical deficiency of LH and FSH. That condition offers useful biology, but it is not interchangeable with temporary suppression after anabolic-steroid use, and no standard HMG PCT protocol has been established by strong randomized trials.
A 2024 systematic review of anabolic-steroid-related infertility found only 13 studies comparing recovery approaches. Injectable gonadotropins were among the treatments associated with restored sperm production, but the authors described their use as poorly characterized and called for better-quality data. That is the honest evidence tier: human fertility literature exists, while the HMG-specific PCT claim remains weak.

HMG vs hCG: what is the practical difference?
HMG vs hCG comes down to which gonadotropin signals they deliver. hCG acts mainly as an LH substitute; HMG brings FSH plus LH activity. That makes hCG the more direct tool for stimulating testicular testosterone, while HMG’s reason for appearing in fertility-focused discussions is the added FSH signal for spermatogenesis.

Is HMG FDA-approved in the United States?
HMG is FDA-approved as MENOPUR for a specific female fertility use, not for male PCT. As of July 17, 2026, FDA’s Purple Book entry lists MENOPUR (menotropins) as a prescription, 75-IU subcutaneous injection. The labeled indication is development of multiple follicles and pregnancy during an assisted reproductive technology cycle.
This is where many HMG pages blur two different claims. The drug has substantial human experience in women undergoing fertility treatment. That does not transfer FDA approval, dosing evidence, or safety conclusions to men recovering from anabolic steroids. Male use is off-label, injectable, clinician-managed, and often costly because the medicine and fertility monitoring both add expense.
MENOPUR also carries serious ovarian-treatment risks, including ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome, blood clots, ovarian torsion, and multiple gestation. Those label risks come from the approved population; they should not be copied onto men as if sex did not matter. For male off-label use, the larger problem is that adverse-event and long-term PCT data are sparse.
Is peptide-shop HMG the same as MENOPUR?
Peptide-shop HMG is not automatically equivalent to MENOPUR. FDA approval belongs to the finished prescription product, with its manufacturer, purification, activity testing, sterile formulation, and label. A research vial using the words hmg human menopausal gonadotropin does not inherit those controls merely because the name matches.
HMG makes an awkward peptide-shop product for a reason: it is a biologic mixture whose identity is expressed in units of FSH and LH activity, not simple milligrams of one molecule. The useful question is not whether the seller calls it hmg peptide. The useful questions are which product it is, whether it is prescription MENOPUR, and which measured outcome the evidence actually supports.
