The -tide suffix means the nonproprietary name belongs to the broad peptide family. The WHO INN Stem Book defines -tide for peptides and glycopeptides, while its current addendum uses the shorter definition “peptides.” A peptide is a chain of amino acids; the ending is a classification label, not a claim that the drug works or is approved.
Questions about tide suffix drug names often get one detail wrong: not every peptide must literally end in -tide. WHO lists special stems including -actide, -pressin, -relin, and -tocin. Insulin also follows its own naming convention. The useful rule is “-tide signals a peptide,” not “every peptide has -tide printed at the end.”

USAN is the United States naming program; INN is the World Health Organization’s international program. The two systems coordinate so one substance does not collect a different generic name in every country. Brand names remain separate, which is why semaglutide can appear on products called Ozempic, Wegovy, or Rybelsus.

Does retatrutide have a special -trutide stem?
Retatrutide safely tells you one thing from its ending: it is a peptide. The WHO stem books checked for this page do not define -trutide as a stem, so the name alone should not be used to infer three targets. A search result may offer a neat syllable-by-syllable story; without an entry in the official stem list, that story is etymological fan fiction.
The same restraint applies across the USAN stem peptide catalog. A recognized long stem can carry a precise meaning. An unrecognized string inside a name carries no dependable meaning until an official source assigns one. For retatrutide, pharmacology must come from its trial record and sponsor documents, not from carving the word into convenient pieces.

The codes do not reliably reveal the target, mechanism, evidence tier, or legal status. A tidy suffix system and a laboratory code system are different species wearing similar white coats.
The records make the mismatch visible. PubChem identifies BPC-157 as a 15-amino-acid peptide, TB-500 as the seven-residue sequence LKKTETQ with an acetyl group, and CJC-1295 as a much larger growth-hormone-releasing-factor analogue. The numbers do not form a reusable decoder ring across those three compounds.
That is the practical answer to why do peptide drugs end in -tide: formal generic names may carry verified family stems; research codes may carry no portable meaning at all.
