Definition

A peptide is a short chain of amino acids linked together — the same building blocks as proteins, just far fewer of them.

A peptide is a small chain of amino acids strung together like beads on a thread. Amino acids are the twenty building blocks your body uses to make everything protein-based, and when you link a handful of them in a specific order, you get a peptide.

If amino acids are letters, a peptide is a short word and a protein is a long paragraph. Same alphabet, wildly different length — and length is the only real line between the two. A peptide is short (a rough rule of thumb is under about 50 amino acids); a protein is long and folds into a complex shape.

That small size is the whole appeal. Peptides are the body’s messengers: insulin, oxytocin, and the gut hormone GLP-1 are all peptides. Because a peptide’s shape is tuned to fit one receptor, it can carry a very specific instruction — heal this, release that hormone, curb appetite — with less collateral effect than a broad drug.

A concrete pair shows how broad the label can be without changing what it means chemically or describing one single job or source in the body. Oxytocin is a peptide messenger made by the body: its amino acids form one short chain, and that chain’s sequence and shape let it engage the oxytocin receptor. Semaglutide is an engineered peptide analog of GLP-1; its structure has been modified while retaining the features needed to activate the GLP-1 receptor. The two compounds have different origins and jobs, but both count as peptides for the same basic reason: their amino acids are joined in a defined order, creating a molecule that can carry a specific biological message.

It’s also why peptides are usually injected rather than swallowed: your gut digests amino acid chains, so most peptides wouldn’t survive the trip through the stomach as a pill.
