Citrulline malate is the pre-workout world’s favorite way to take citrulline: the amino acid L-citrulline bound to malic acid (malate), usually in a 2:1 or 1:1 ratio. The citrulline half drives the blood-flow “pump” everyone’s after. The open question — and the reason this page exists separately from plain L-citrulline — is whether the malate half does anything on its own.

What is citrulline malate?

Citrulline malate is two ingredients sold as one: the amino acid L-citrulline chemically bound to malic acid, the sour compound that makes green apples tart. Makers combine them into a single powder, usually at a 2:1 or 1:1 ratio of citrulline to malate. The citrulline is the half your body converts into arginine and then nitric oxide, the signal that relaxes and widens blood vessels — that full conversion is covered on the L-citrulline page. Malate is a step in the Krebs cycle, the loop your cells run to turn food into usable energy. Put simply, citrulline malate is a delivery vehicle for citrulline with a second ingredient bolted on that may or may not pull its own weight.

Citrulline malate vs. plain L-citrulline

The practical difference between citrulline malate and plain L-citrulline is the malate and the math. Gram for gram, citrulline malate contains less actual citrulline, because part of every gram is malic acid. In a 2:1 blend roughly two-thirds is citrulline; in a 1:1 blend only about half is. So “6 grams of citrulline malate” and “6 grams of L-citrulline” are not the same citrulline dose — a gap that quietly muddies label comparisons and even some study write-ups. If you only care about the nitric-oxide effect, plain citrulline delivers more of it per gram. People reach for the malate version anyway because most pre-workouts already use it, it mixes and tastes reasonably, and there’s a hope the malate contributes something extra to endurance. Whether that hope pays off is the next question.

Does the malate actually do anything?

The evidence for malate’s own contribution is thin. Malate (malic acid) is a genuine intermediate in the Krebs cycle — the energy-producing loop inside your cells — so on paper, adding more of it might support aerobic ATP production during hard exercise. That’s a reasonable hypothesis, and it’s the marketing story behind the malate. The snag is that no human study cleanly separates malate’s effect from the citrulline it’s attached to. When a trial shows citrulline malate improved reps or eased soreness, the citrulline (which raises arginine and nitric oxide, see arginine) is the obvious explanation; the malate’s separate role is assumed, not demonstrated. Until someone runs citrulline-alone against citrulline-plus-malate at a matched citrulline dose, the honest answer is: the malate might help a little, and we can’t yet prove it does.

What does the research show?

The research on citrulline malate as a whole is best described as mixed but leaning positive. Most trials use a single ~6–8 gram dose about an hour before training. Across those studies, the recurring findings are a modest increase in reps-to-failure or total training volume and, in some, reduced muscle soreness in the following day or two. But the results don’t line up neatly — plenty of well-run trials find no clear benefit, and where there is one, it’s moderate rather than dramatic. This is the kind of evidence base where honest expectations matter: citrulline malate may squeeze out a few extra reps or take a slight edge off soreness for some people, which is worth something for a cheap, well-tolerated powder, but it isn’t a difference you’re guaranteed to feel. How much do people use?

Doses in the exercise studies cluster around 6 to 8 grams of citrulline malate taken roughly 60 minutes before training — long enough for blood citrulline and arginine to rise. Because the citrulline-to-malate ratio changes how much actual citrulline you get, a 2:1 product at 6–8 grams lands close to the ~4–5 grams of pure citrulline that blood-flow studies tend to use, which is part of why the 2:1 ratio became the informal standard. This is information drawn from the research and the training community, not a personal protocol — start low if your stomach is sensitive, and remember that more hasn’t been shown to mean better. Is citrulline malate safe?

Citrulline malate is well tolerated in the short-term exercise trials that have tested it, typically at 6–8 grams, with mild stomach upset or loose stools the main complaint at the higher end. It doesn’t carry the harsh GI reputation high-dose arginine does — one reason the citrulline route caught on in the first place. Two honest caveats: because the citrulline half raises nitric oxide, anyone taking blood-pressure or erectile-dysfunction medication that works on the same pathway should clear it with a doctor, since the effects can add up; and long-term safety data specifically for regular citrulline malate use is limited.
